Summer Bucket List Survival Guide

*post contains affiliate links*

I recently shared my Summer Bucket List with 50 ideas for summer fun - including service projects and rainy day activities! There are so many wonderful Bucket Lists out there - but, before you jump into your bucket list and head out on your adventures, there are a few important items that will make your summer more safe, fun and memorable!

Here is my "Bucket List" Survival Guide. You will want to have these items on hand before you head out on excursions this summer {this bag would be a great way to carry all of the items!}...

1. Sunscreen: Getting a sunburn is the most sure-fire way to ruin summer fun! Here are a few options (some sunscreens do contain harsh chemicals - so choose wisely for your family). You can always just buy some coconut oil and make your own!

Here is a great deal on a "traditional" sunscreen >

If you are looking for a more natural option >

Or you can just buy some Coconut Oil (this will last forever!) >

2. Water Bottles: If you are going to be out in the sun for an extended period of time - nature walk, bike ride, baseball game - taking along water bottles is a great idea! I love these water bottles - they are reusable and keep your water nice and cool.

3. Camera: You probably want to capture some of these awesome memories you will be making, right?!? The giant banana split, the slip-n-slide, yard twister - you will cherish these moments forever when captured with a camera. I have a Canon Rebel EOS - which I love and it takes amazing pictures. If you are in the market for a high-quality camera - I cannot say enough good things about the Canon Rebel. If you are looking for something more affordable this summer, there are some great options as well...

Another great option in the Canon Family >

Here is a cheaper, but still very functional camera >

4. Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from those UV rays! I am sunglasses girl - I always wear them if I am outside, so this is very important for me. Here are some great deals on sunglasses that are stylish and functional...

The retro affordable option >

2 pairs - Designer duds >

For the kiddos >

5. Picnic Basket: If you are spending the day at the beach building sandcastles or just at the park splashing in the creek, it is so easy to drop a huge amount of cash on over-priced and unhealthy food. Get a nice insulated picnic basket and always be prepared by packing your own snacks and meals! I have one of these and we use it all the time!

6. Bug Spray: If you are going to be catching fireflies, stargazing or roasting marshmallows - you may need some bug repellent. Here is a safe option...

7. Puddle Jumpers: These may not go along with the bucket list, but they definitely deserve a spot on any summer survival guide. If you have non-swimmers and will be doing any sort of swimming this summer - these are simply wonderful! The price is worth it for your peace of mind and they are much more comfortable than those life jackets that choke kids' necks and force them to float on their backs. These will also give your kids confidence in the water to try swimming!

Please read my full disclosure here.

Thanks for stopping by on Functional Friday! I hope you will find this list helpful!

The Day I Failed At Motherhood

It was a Monday morning. The weekend had been filled with busyness, it felt as though we had not even had one moment to catch our breath and the week was upon us once again. I awoke to a house that was disheveled by the hustle and bustle of running in and out from one engagement to the next. Okay , I thought, I am going to whip this house into shape ! I am one of those people who simply cannot relax or enjoy my day if my house is in disarray (thanks, Mom!). I fed the kiddos breakfast and immediately got to work. I enlisted the help of the children. I was working on the dishes and kitchen clean-up and I asked my almost four year old and my five year old to pick up all the toys in the living room and vacuum. My five year old daughter LOVES to vacuum - and it works as a great incentive to get things picked up off the floor. After a few minutes I heard her turn the vacuum on, and I continued on my busy way finishing up the kitchen. A short while later, after the hum of the vacuum

God Changed My Mind About Modesty

I was recently sitting in a mall food court with my fifteen month old daughter, as my husband waited in line for the carousel with our older two. As the ride came to a stop, there was a group of young girls riding on horses directly in front of me. I noticed that the one little girl (who was maybe 8 or 9) was wearing very short shorts - as in you could not even tell she was wearing anything when she was sitting on the horse. To make matters worse, when she raised herself up off the horse, her entire bottom was exposed! I cringed and felt sick to my stomach as I peered around at the hundreds of people in the busy mall food court who may have just witnessed it as well. The little girl adjusted her shorts and went on her way, but I couldn't shake the sick feeling I had - the thought that someone in the mall could have enjoyed seeing that little girl like that... I know that "wardrobe malfunctions" may happen sometimes. Even when dressed modestly, the wind can blow up a

3 Tips for the Newlywed Wife

Today I am celebrating 8 years of marriage to my husband... {Our Wedding Day ~ May 7th, 2005} I am certainly NOT a marriage expert, and still make many mistakes (just ask my husband!). We have seen ups and downs in these eight years - financial hardships, unemployment, lots of closed doors...but God has been faithful and I am truly blessed with a wonderful marriage. I have {sorta} figured a few things out...especially from those newlywed days. The first few months of my marriage were a challenge and a huge adjustment. So, I have a few words of advice for newlywed wives, from a {slightly} more experienced wife: It is okay to mourn your former life.  My husband and I had been married for about a week, we were not taking a honeymoon for a few weeks until my husband finished school that year, so life had just continued on as "normal" after our wedding. Except...it wasn't normal. A week before I had been an unmarried 20 year old girl living with my parents, s
