The Noticing Jar

This is my FAVORITE tool to inspire positive behavior in my children. I am a strong believer in Conscious Discipline, which teaches that what you focus on you get more of. So if you focus on the negative, they will associate negative behavior with attention from you. So let's focus on the positive!

Create a Noticing Jar

Use a mason jar or any other large jar.
Decorate the outside of the jar with the child's name.

When you notice the child making a good choice, having positive behavior, being helpful, kind, etc. you tell them that you noticed their behavior, that you are proud of them and have them place a ball (pom pom from the dollar store) in their jar.

The point here is that they are not receiving an immediate reward, only praise from you. We want children to learn to do the right thing because it is the right thing to do. The exciting part for them comes in the final result - Once they have filled their jar, they will get to have a Celebration of their success. My children are currently working towards going to Chuck E Cheese (their choice). In the past they have worked towards a bowling night and going to the zoo. Let the child choose what they want the celebration to be (within reason, and within your budget!).

Enjoy!! Please share this with other moms and leave feedback if you use it and let me know how it worked for your family :)

God Changed My Mind About Modesty

I was recently sitting in a mall food court with my fifteen month old daughter, as my husband waited in line for the carousel with our older two. As the ride came to a stop, there was a group of young girls riding on horses directly in front of me. I noticed that the one little girl (who was maybe 8 or 9) was wearing very short shorts - as in you could not even tell she was wearing anything when she was sitting on the horse. To make matters worse, when she raised herself up off the horse, her entire bottom was exposed! I cringed and felt sick to my stomach as I peered around at the hundreds of people in the busy mall food court who may have just witnessed it as well. The little girl adjusted her shorts and went on her way, but I couldn't shake the sick feeling I had - the thought that someone in the mall could have enjoyed seeing that little girl like that... I know that "wardrobe malfunctions" may happen sometimes. Even when dressed modestly, the wind can blow up a...

The Day I Failed At Motherhood

It was a Monday morning. The weekend had been filled with busyness, it felt as though we had not even had one moment to catch our breath and the week was upon us once again. I awoke to a house that was disheveled by the hustle and bustle of running in and out from one engagement to the next. Okay , I thought, I am going to whip this house into shape ! I am one of those people who simply cannot relax or enjoy my day if my house is in disarray (thanks, Mom!). I fed the kiddos breakfast and immediately got to work. I enlisted the help of the children. I was working on the dishes and kitchen clean-up and I asked my almost four year old and my five year old to pick up all the toys in the living room and vacuum. My five year old daughter LOVES to vacuum - and it works as a great incentive to get things picked up off the floor. After a few minutes I heard her turn the vacuum on, and I continued on my busy way finishing up the kitchen. A short while later, after the hum of the vacuum ...

The Beatitudes of Fatherhood {Free Printable}

Blessed is the Dad who is so frustrated and at the end of his rope, that He allows God to take over. He knows that if he surrenders his struggles to God, He will be made a new creation in Christ. Blessed is the Dad who is dealing with the pain of death. The dad who is grieving a wife…a parent…a child…a friend. As he mourns, he will know that he is not forsaken - the God of all comfort will sustain him and strengthen him. Blessed is the Dad who is confident in his life, secure in his choices and bold in his convictions. He does not obsess over outward appearance and does not compare his life to others. He does not worry about impressing his peers or proving himself. He is satisfied with his life, because he is a treasured son of God - his worth and acceptance is found in the Lord. Blessed is the Dad who is hungry for God. He seeks righteousness and holiness. He is a man after God’s heart and he leads his family toward the cross. His wife will honor him, his children...
